Heating oil - small is beautiful...

Introducing - Badger Fuels Limited

Badger Fuels Limited - Heating Oil - 100, 200 or 300 litres - Your SMALL delivery specialist!

Badger Fuels is a small private Company created through thirty years of experience keeping local homes warm in villages around Sudbury, Hadleigh and Ipswich.

As heating oil users will know, traditionally Oil Companies will only supply a minimum of 500 litres. Badger Fuels have revolutionised this out-dated concept by using brand new micro tankers built with industry approved meters, to deliver smaller quantities of 100, 200 or 300 litres. Nicholas Wicks (MD) believes the way forward for the oil user is to buy only what they need when they need it, giving the customer tailored and unique control. We have focused our efforts in not only providing local people with smaller quantities of oil to suit smaller budgets, but we are also concerned about the ever increasing thefts of heating oil, particularly in the more rural locations.

Spring Advice - Make it hard for thieves

With the clocks having now gone forward, householders across Suffolk are being urged not to make it easy for potential thieves.

Officers are advising people to pay extra attention to home and vehicle security with the onset of the warm weather - often seen as an opportunist time for this type of crime.

Chief Inspector Paul Bradford of Suffolk Constabulary Community Safety said: "Most thefts are carried out by opportunist thieves."

"The summer months can bring with them thieves on the lookout for lapses in security - such as doors and windows left open or property left on display at beauty spot car parks."

"People are advised to be aware and make use of simple crime prevention methods which deprive thieves of the opportunity to steal."

Suffolk Constabulary offers the following advice to residents:

Windows

Always lock your windows when you leave the house.

Remove the keys and keep them in a safe place. However, everyone should know where the keys are kept so they can escape in an emergency.

Doors

Keep your front and back doors locked or in view when you are at home.

Use or consider fitting a door chain and spy hole - a chain allows you to speak to the caller without opening the door fully and the spy hole allows you to see who is at the door.

Fit five lever mortise locks to all external doors.

Check your cylinder locks on patio/plastic doors and ensure they are snap and bump resistant - a local Master Locksmith can advise if you are not sure.

Keys

Never leave a spare key in a convenient hiding place such as under the doormat, burglars know all the usual hiding places.

Never leave your house or car keys in or near a door or windows.

Attention should also be paid to the security of sheds and garages and to the property stored within.

Parked cars - especially those left in remote areas such as beauty spots - should be left locked and secure with no property left on display and satellite navigation devices, car audio equipment, cameras, handbags and laptops should be removed from the vehicle entirely.

People attending large scale events or out and about in busy areas should be mindful of thieves and keep handbags closed and mobile phones out of sight and kept securely on their person.

Chief Inspector Bradford added: "Suffolk is an extremely safe place to live and your chances of being a victim of such crimes still remain extremely low, but you should look at your home through a thief's eyes. Don't become an easy target.

"We would also encourage people to be a good neighbour - If anyone is spotted acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call the police."

Anyone with information about thieves operating in their area should contact Suffolk Constabulary on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.

OR

Please use the following link to pass useful information to Suffolk Police about any incident. http://www.suffolk.police.uk/safetyadvice/reportacrime/tellthepolice.aspx

DO NOT USE THIS LINK IN AN EMERGENCY OR IN A SITUATION THAT REQUIRES AN IMMEDIATE POLICE RESPONSE WHEN YOU SHOULD RING 999.

Police Direct Team

One of the latest computer based scams being reported regularly to Suffolk Constabulary goes as follows:

Whilst using the internet, a message flashes up onto your screen, which you will also find locks your computer, with words to the effect of it being from the Metropolitan and Strathclyde Police (or similar forces). The message will imply that you have been viewing unsuitable web sites and they have locked your computer to prevent further viewing; you are then asked to pay £100 or a similar amount to have your screen unlocked, but even if you pay you will find your machine remains unusable.

Do not pay - this is a scam and you will lose your money with no improvement to your computer, which will have to be professionally examined and cleaned to remove the lock.

If you experience this fraud, or have previously not reported having been a victim, then please contact Suffolk Constabulary via 101. It should also be reported to Action Fraud via www.actionfraud.org.uk

Spring 2012

2011 saw the Village Hall completely redecorated internally thanks to the Community Service Scheme (yes, even the ceiling!)

Local Foods Suffolk

Suffolk ACRE’s new local food project team has already started supporting over two dozen projects in their first quarter, following a fantastic response from communities across the county since the project launched in September.

Projects range from allotment improvement projects, to new orchard planting schemes, a number of community gardens and even some involving community pig keeping! Many groups have sought funding from the project’s capital grants pot to kick-start projects, whilst others have sought advice and mentoring to build their skills, knowledge and confidence.

Some projects are already starting to bring communities together, especially in the Suffolk Coastal district where allotment groups in Dennington and Saxmundham have met to share use of a community brushcutter funded by Suffolk ACRE. This has been used by both groups to create and maintain community gardens within allotment sites in their parishes.

Download the latest newsletter here.

Satellite Navigation Correction

If your community is concerned about sat-nav users taking large vehicles down narrow roads, you can report this and other issues via the web to Navteq, the main publisher of sat-nav databases.

Your computer will have to have java installed.

Browse to http://mapreporter.navteq.com

Use the search box to find the place you want to report on or click-and-drag the map.

On the left of the web page are 4 main categories:

Point of Interest. Here you can record or make changes to a shop, business, or other Point of Interest (POI). You can promote your community by listing local businesses as people often use their sat-nav as a 'Yellow Pages'.

Address Marker/Location. Make changes to the location of a house or building.

Road or Road Feature. Here you can add, edit or remove roads and road features such as signs, one-ways, or restrictions.

Other not listed.

But if you right-click on a road itself, a dialogue box pops up:

Edit details of this road

Exit/Roundabout is new

Turn restrictions have changed

Signs are different

Other categories

Click ‘edit details of this road’ and you will get a choice of:

Edit Road Segment Details

Data is correct, I want to report something else

If you click 'road segment' you can report any one-way restrictions, change the class of road, note any vehicle restrictions, the type of road surface and describe the house numbering. Quite often this data will be blank and so you will be providing a useful service to complete it.

Navteq classifies roads in their database as Class 1, 2, 3, 4. This corresponds to A, B, C, D roads. In the UK, only A and B are officially designated on signage although Highways Department will refer internally to C and D and Unclassified roads too.

If you click 'something else' you can add advice about road width restrictions or errors on the map that are not reportable elsewhere.

You can also attach photos of any errors or issues.

It is probably best to be concise and restrict your report to geographic information that can reasonably be reflected in a digital map. Therefore it is probably not much use to report “this road has a problem with speeding…” while reporting “the road is only eight feet wide at this point…” is more useful to the digital mapmakers.

Some sat-navs also use data from Tele Atlas. You can enter less geographic information on their website but this database is more detailed in POI categories. http://mapinsight.teleatlas.com/mapfeedback/index.php

To research or record local features, or if you want to use maps without paying a hefty copyright fee, you can contribute to global ‘wiki’ map http://www.openstreetmap.org where you can record features of interest.

Suffolk Constabulary Press Release

Suffolk Police is reminding people in Babergh to lock their doors and windows following a spate of burglaries in the area. Since the beginning of May there have been 20 house burglaries due to insecurities. Many of the burglaries could have been prevented if a few simple steps to secure the property had been made. Police are urging all homeowners to take simple precautions in order to minimise the chances of homes being targeted.

The Suffolk Constabulary have issued a press release with full information and advice for minimising the risk of being targeted. Click the link below to download a copy.
