Monday 3rd October 2022 – Celebrating Suffolk Women by Sarah E Doig, BMus(Hons), DipLib
Sarah is an independent historical researcher and author. She is also a popular speaker on local and general history. As well as having written for a number of local magazines, Sarah has had several books published by The History Press and Amberley Publishing. These include ‘The A-Z of Curious Suffolk’, ‘The Little History of Suffolk’ and ‘A-Z of Ipswich: Places, People, History’. Sarah is the current Chair of the Friends of Suffolk Archives.
Monday 7th November 2022 – Charlie and ‘The Dig’ by Charlie Haylock
Having entertained us before on Suffolk surnames and dialect, well known raconteur and broadcaster Charlie returns with his intriguing behind the scenes account of how he coached Ralph Fiennes and the cast of the acclaimed Netflix film ‘The Dig’, the story of the excavation of the Sutton Hoo ship, in the Suffolk accent.
Monday 5th December 2022 – Small Wars in Far Away Places; the Suffolk Regiment during the Cold War, 1945-1964 by Dr John Greenacre
The post Second World War period was one of turmoil for the British Army including the Suffolk Regiment. The withdrawal from Empire created instability that saw men of the Suffolk Regiment fighting in Palestine, Malaya and Cyprus. Domestic politics also had a strong influence with the rise and fall of National Service and ultimately the demise of the county regiment. John is Lecturer in History at the University of Suffolk.
Monday 9th January 2023 – Coastal Command and the Battle of the Atlantic – by Richard Gates
Following on from his informative talk on the history of Hendon Aerodrome in 2020, Richard is back and will be talking about the conflict seen from the perspective of an officer, his father, whose active service was during the battle.
Monday 6th February 2023 – The Black Death by Professor Mark Bailey
Mark is one of the foremost medieval historians in the country and Professor of Late Medieval History at the University of East Anglia. His talk will be his authoritative and fascinating account and assessment of this great 14th century pandemic that resulted in the deaths of almost half the population and had an enormous impact on society.
Monday 6th March 2023 – ‘I’m Happy I’m a Crier’ – by Brenda Willison
Brenda is the Town Crier for Newmarket and the current Chair of The Loyal Company of Town Criers. Her talk will cover some of the history of Town Crying and her experience of the last 34 years as a Crier.
